In short:<\/strong> burnt taste always means the same thing \u2014 dry cotton met a hot coil. Once cotton is scorched, no amount of refilling brings the flavour back and the coil has to be replaced. The value of this guide is in stopping it happening to the next one.<\/p>\n

Can a burnt coil be saved?<\/h2>\n

No. This is worth saying plainly, because a lot of advice online suggests soaking or rinsing it.<\/p>\n

Scorched cotton is chemically changed. Rinsing removes some residue but the taste stays, and you are now inhaling burnt cotton. Replace it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The six causes, most common first<\/h2>\n

1. You did not prime a new coil<\/h3>\n

By far the leading cause. A new coil has bone-dry cotton, and firing it before the liquid has soaked through burns it within a second or two.<\/p>\n

Fix:<\/strong> put three to five drops directly on each cotton window, fit it, fill the tank, then wait five to ten minutes<\/strong>. Take two or three puffs with the device off before you fire it. Full steps in the filling guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Vaping with the tank nearly empty<\/h3>\n

When the level drops below the coil’s wicking holes, the cotton stops being fed. The next puff is a dry one.<\/p>\n

Fix:<\/strong> refill when the level reaches the top of the coil housing, not when the tank runs out.<\/p>\n

3. Chain vaping<\/h3>\n

Cotton needs a few seconds to re-soak between puffs. Take them back to back and you are drawing on cotton that has not caught up \u2014 even with a full tank.<\/p>\n

Fix:<\/strong> leave ten to fifteen seconds between puffs. If you cannot, your nicotine strength is probably too low for your device.<\/p>\n

4. Wattage set above the coil’s range<\/h3>\n

Every coil has a range printed on the side. Above it, the coil vaporises liquid faster than the cotton can absorb more, and burns.<\/p>\n

Fix:<\/strong> start at the bottom of the printed range and work up. Higher wattage is not better \u2014 see how resistance, airflow and wattage work together<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5. The wrong e-liquid for the coil<\/h3>\n

A thick freebase in a small MTL coil cannot get through the narrow wicking holes fast enough. The cotton stays half-dry and burns early.<\/p>\n

6. Sweet, dark flavours<\/h3>\n

Heavily sweetened liquids \u2014 dessert, candy, custard \u2014 leave caramelised sugar on the coil. It builds up, insulates the wire, and starts tasting burnt long before the coil is worn out.<\/p>\n

Fix:<\/strong> nothing is wrong with these flavours, but expect to change coils more often on them than on a plain fruit or menthol.<\/p>\n
