In short:<\/strong> a used coil cannot be restored. Rinsing removes some residue and can buy a few days, but the cotton is already degraded and the flavour does not come back. What genuinely extends coil life is keeping the tank<\/em> clean and changing the habits that build residue in the first place.<\/p>\n

Why coils cannot really be revived<\/h2>\n

Two things wear out, and only one of them can be rinsed.<\/p>\n

The mesh<\/strong> collects caramelised sugar and darkened residue. Some of that will rinse off.<\/p>\n

The cotton<\/strong> is the actual problem. It breaks down with heat, and once it has, it no longer wicks evenly. No amount of washing reverses that \u2014 and a rinsed coil that is not bone dry before you fire it will burn immediately.<\/p>\n

If the coil already tastes scorched, it is finished; see burnt taste<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you want to try anyway<\/h2>\n

Worth a go only on a coil that is dull rather than burnt, and only as a stopgap:<\/p>\n

  1. Remove it and rinse under warm running water<\/strong> until it runs clear<\/li>\n
  2. Blow gently through it from the base to clear water from the mesh<\/li>\n
  3. Tap it on a tissue, then leave it to dry 24 to 48 hours<\/strong>, standing upright<\/li>\n
  4. Prime it with fresh liquid before refitting, exactly as you would a new one<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Do not<\/strong> use hot or boiling water, vinegar, alcohol or ultrasonic cleaners on a cotton coil. They strip and damage the cotton, and residues left behind get inhaled.<\/p>\n

    Do not<\/strong> fire a damp coil to dry it. That is how coils are destroyed.<\/p>\n

    What actually works: clean the tank<\/h2>\n

    This is the part worth doing every time you change a coil, and it makes a real difference.<\/p>\n
