In short: your device decides this, not your taste. A small pod with a coil above 1.0 ohm needs salt nic. A larger sub-ohm device below 1.0 ohm needs freebase. Getting it backwards is the most common mistake we see at the counter.
The one difference that matters
Both are nicotine. The difference is chemical: salt nicotine has benzoic acid added, which lowers the pH.
That single change means salt nic goes down smoothly at a high strength, where the same strength in freebase would be harsh enough to make you cough. So salt nic is sold strong and vaped in small amounts; freebase is sold weak and vaped in large amounts.

How to tell which you need in ten seconds
Look at the coil or pod you are using and find the ohm rating printed on it.
- 0.8Ω, 1.0Ω, 1.2Ω or higher → salt nic. This is almost every small pod: Caliburn, Xros, Xlim, Wenax and the like.
- 0.6Ω, 0.4Ω, 0.15Ω or lower → freebase. This is sub-ohm tanks and mods.

What goes wrong when you mix them up
Freebase in a small pod: at 3 mg in a device that gives you only a few small puffs, you never feel satisfied. People respond by chain-vaping, which burns through coils and liquid for no benefit.
Salt nic in a sub-ohm device: this is the one to avoid. A 50 mg liquid through a 0.15Ω coil delivers an enormous amount of nicotine very quickly — genuinely unpleasant, and it can leave you dizzy and nauseous. Which strength within salt nic?

Coming off cigarettes, most people start at 35 mg and adjust after a week. There is no prize for starting high — too strong is unpleasant and puts people off entirely.
Which is better value?
Per bottle, freebase looks cheaper for the volume. In practice a 30 ml salt nic in a small pod often lasts longer than a 60 ml freebase in a sub-ohm device, because a sub-ohm device consumes several times more liquid per session. Compare by days of use, not by bottle price.
Can you mix the two in one tank?
Technically yes, practically no. You end up with a strength you cannot calculate and a muddled flavour. If you want to change, empty the tank, clean it, and start fresh.
