Vape Coil Resistance Chart: Which Ohm for What

In short: the ohm rating printed on a coil decides four other things — wattage, airflow, e-liquid type and nicotine strength. Read it once and every other decision follows.

These are working ranges, not rules. The range printed on your coil always wins — manufacturers test their own mesh, and a 0.4Ω from one brand is not identical to a 0.4Ω from another.

How to read it

Lower ohm = thicker wire = more power needed. A sub-ohm coil has a large mesh surface; at low wattage it never reaches temperature and tastes of nothing.

Higher ohm = thinner wire = less power needed. A 1.2Ω coil reaches temperature almost instantly, and extra watts only burn the cotton.

This is why wattage is not a quality setting. There is no “better”, only correct or incorrect for the coil in your hand.

Where to start on a new coil

Start at the lowest number in the printed range and work up two or three watts at a time until the flavour is full and the vapour is warm but not hot. Stop there. Going higher from that point costs coil life and gains nothing.

What the reading is telling you

  • “Check atomizer” or “no atomizer” — the coil is not making contact. Take it out, check the contact pin, refit it.
  • “Ohms too low” — the coil is below what the device supports. Wrong coil for the device.
  • A reading that jumps around — a loose connection or a damaged coil. Replace it.
  • A reading far from the printed value — a manufacturing fault. Do not use it.

Two safety notes

Never fire a coil below what your device supports. The minimum resistance is printed in the manual for a reason — it is a current limit, not a suggestion.

Never pair a very low resistance with high-strength salt nic. A 50 mg liquid through a 0.15Ω coil delivers a genuinely unpleasant dose. This is the mismatch behind most “vaping made me dizzy” complaints — see salt nic vs freebase.
