MTL vs DTL Coils: Resistance, Airflow and Wattage

In short: MTL and DTL are two ways of inhaling, and the coil decides which one your device is capable of. Resistance, airflow and wattage move together — you cannot change one and leave the other two alone.

The two draws

MTL — mouth to lung. You draw the vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it. Tight, slow, and exactly the motion of smoking a cigarette.

DTL — direct to lung. You draw straight into the lungs in one motion, the way you would breathe in through a wide straw. Fast, open, and much more vapour.

Why higher resistance means lower power

A high-resistance coil uses thinner wire with less surface area. It needs little power to reach temperature, and pushing more at it simply burns the cotton.

A sub-ohm coil is the opposite: thick wire, large mesh, a lot of surface area. At 15 W it barely warms up and tastes of nothing; it needs 60 W to work as designed.

This is why wattage is not a quality setting. Higher is not better — it is only correct or incorrect for the coil in front of you. Every coil has its range printed on the side; start at the bottom of it.

Airflow has to match too

Airflow is the part people leave at whatever it was set to, and it changes everything.

  • Open airflow on an MTL coil → thin, weak, airy. No throat hit, no satisfaction.
  • Closed airflow on a DTL coil → hot, harsh, restricted, and it will spit liquid at you.

Set airflow to match the coil first, then adjust wattage.

Which should you use?

Choose MTL if you are coming off cigarettes, want the same familiar draw, prefer discreet vapour, and want your liquid to last. This is the right answer for most people.

Choose DTL if you have vaped for a while, want dense vapour and broad flavour, and do not mind the running cost and the maintenance.

The mismatch that causes most problems

Putting a high-strength salt nic through a sub-ohm DTL coil is the pairing to avoid. It delivers far more nicotine than intended, very quickly, and it leaks — the thin liquid runs straight through the oversized wicking holes.

Can one device do both?

Some can. A number of tanks and pod systems ship with two coil heads — a high-resistance MTL one and a sub-ohm DTL one — and adjustable airflow to match. Swapping between them means changing the coil, the airflow and the liquid together, not just one of the three.
