Best Tobacco Vape Flavours for Ex-Smokers

Last reviewed: August 2026

In short: tobacco e-liquid does not taste like a lit cigarette, and it cannot — the taste of a cigarette comes from combustion, and nothing here is burning. Expecting a match is why most people write the category off after one bottle. What good tobacco liquid gives you is the character of tobacco: dry, nutty, slightly sweet.

The four styles

Style Tastes like Suits
Plain / classic Dry, earthy, mildly nutty The closest thing to a cigarette
RY4 Tobacco with caramel and vanilla Most people, most of the time
Tobacco + mint Dry tobacco with a cool finish Ex-menthol smokers
Cured / cigar Heavy, dark, leathery Cigar and pipe smokers

Where to start

If you have just stopped smoking: start with a plain classic tobacco. It is the least sweet and the closest thing to what you are used to. Many people find it too plain after a few weeks and move to RY4 — that progression is normal, and it is a good sign.

If you smoked menthols: go straight to tobacco with mint. Plain tobacco alone will feel like it is missing something, because for you it is.

If you find all of them harsh: the problem is probably strength, not flavour. See below.

Get the strength right first

Tobacco flavours are usually vaped at a higher nicotine strength than fruit, because the people buying them have just stopped smoking. That combination — a dry flavour and a strong throat hit — is what people describe as “harsh”.

Before abandoning the flavour, try it one step down: 35 mg instead of 50, or 20 instead of 35 in salt nic. It often turns an unpleasant liquid into a good one. Which type your device takes is covered in salt nic vs freebase.

Two things worth knowing

Tobacco flavours darken fast. The liquid in your tank will go brown within days. That is oxidation and it is completely normal — it does not mean the liquid has spoiled or the coil is dying.

They are hard to follow. Tobacco lingers in cotton more than almost anything else. Going from tobacco to a light fruit without changing the coil will taste of neither.

Tobacco flavour or actual tobacco?

If what you want is genuinely the taste of tobacco rather than an interpretation of it, heated tobacco is the more honest answer — it heats a real tobacco stick rather than flavouring a liquid. See the IQOS guide.

A lot of ex-smokers who tried tobacco e-liquid and disliked it are actually better served there.
