Before anything else: this guide does not make health claims and does not compare health outcomes. Both products contain nicotine, which is addictive, and neither is intended for non-smokers, under-18s, or anyone who is pregnant. If your question is a health question, ask a doctor — not a vape shop, and not an article on the internet.
What follows is what changes practically if you move from one to the other.
The mechanical difference
A cigarette burns tobacco at several hundred degrees; you inhale smoke from combustion. A vape heats a liquid until it becomes an aerosol; nothing burns.
That single difference is behind almost everything below — the smell, the ash, the routine, and the reason vape flavour never tastes quite like a cigarette.
What changes day to day
| Cigarettes | Vaping | |
|---|---|---|
| Session | Fixed — a cigarette ends | Open-ended — nothing stops you |
| Smell | Clings to clothes, hair, car | Fades in minutes |
| Mess | Ash, butts, lighters | None |
| Upkeep | None | Charging, refilling, coils |
| Nicotine control | Fixed by the pack | You choose the strength |
| Cost shape | Steady daily spend | Upfront device, then consumables |
The open-ended session catches people out
This is the difference nobody warns you about. A cigarette has a built-in stopping point; a vape does not. Many people who switch find themselves taking nicotine far more often than they used to, simply because nothing tells them to stop.
If that is you, it is worth counting your puffs for a day — and reading how to cut down your nicotine strength.
Nicotine strength is now your decision
With cigarettes the amount is fixed. With vaping you choose, and choosing badly is the most common reason a switch fails.
- Too low → you never feel satisfied, vape constantly, and often go back to cigarettes
- Too high → harsh, dizzying, and unpleasant enough to put you off entirely
Most people coming off a regular smoking habit start around 35 mg salt nic in a small pod device and adjust after a week. See salt nic vs freebase.
The upkeep is real
Cigarettes need nothing. A vape needs charging, refilling, and a new coil every one to two weeks. It is not difficult, but it is not zero, and people who expect zero are the ones who abandon the device in a drawer.
Two guides cover almost all of it: filling properly and why coils burn.
Cost is shaped differently
Cigarettes are a steady daily spend. Vaping is a device upfront, then a much smaller running cost — coils and liquid.
The trap is disposables: they feel like the easy way in, but per day of use they are the most expensive option, often more than the cigarettes you left. If you intend to keep vaping, a refillable pod pays for itself quickly. The families are compared in types of vape in Kuwait.
If you want tobacco taste specifically
Vape flavours labelled tobacco are interpretations, not reproductions — see tobacco vape flavours. If nothing but real tobacco will do, heated tobacco is the closer answer.
