Pod vs Mod: Which Should You Actually Buy?

Last reviewed: August 2026

In short: a pod is small, simple and cheap to run. A mod is powerful, adjustable and demanding. For most people — and certainly for anyone coming off cigarettes — the pod is the right answer, and buying the mod first is one of the most common expensive mistakes in this shop.

Side by side

Pod system Mod and tank
Size Pocket, phone-sized Two-handed, heavy
Battery Built in, 800–1,500 mAh External cells, replaceable
Power Fixed or 10–25 W 5–200 W, adjustable
Draw MTL — like a cigarette DTL — open and airy
E-liquid Salt nic, 20–50 mg Freebase, 3–6 mg
Liquid per day 2–4 ml 8–15 ml
Learning Fill it and go Resistance, wattage, airflow

Why the mod backfires as a first device

It looks like the serious choice, which is exactly the problem. Three things go wrong:

The nicotine is too low to satisfy you. A mod runs 3 mg freebase. If you have just stopped smoking, 3 mg will not touch the craving — so you vape constantly and still feel short.

The liquid cost is three to four times higher. A sub-ohm coil gets through 8–15 ml a day. That is a 60 ml bottle every week.

The maintenance is constant. Coils, wattage, airflow, resistance readings. Enjoyable if you like that; tiresome if you just wanted to stop smoking.

When a mod is genuinely the right call

  • You have vaped for a while and a pod no longer interests you
  • You want dense vapour and the broader flavour a sub-ohm coil gives
  • You want replaceable batteries so the device outlives its cells
  • You enjoy adjusting things — this is a legitimate reason on its own

What a pod does well

  • It satisfies a smoker, because high-strength salt nic is what it is designed for
  • It costs little to run — a pod or coil every one to two weeks and a 30 ml bottle
  • It is discreet — pocketable, and it does not announce itself in a room
  • There is nothing to learn beyond filling it correctly

The middle ground

A number of devices sit between the two: pod-mods with adjustable wattage and swappable MTL or DTL coil heads. They cover most of what a mod does at a fraction of the size, and they are a sensible second device.

Whichever you pick, the coil decides the liquid and the wattage — see the resistance chart and MTL vs DTL.

Deciding in one question

Are you replacing cigarettes, or pursuing a hobby?

Replacing cigarettes → pod. Pursuing a hobby → mod. People who answer honestly rarely regret the purchase; people who buy the mod because it looks better usually end up buying a pod three weeks later anyway.
